Key Findings

A History of Excellence
An idea emerges
Immunotec's journey began in the United States when Dr. Gustavo Bounous started examining the course of recovery in post-surgical patients. He would ultimately continue this research in Canada with the goal of discovering what nutritional items could affect healing and recovery. It became clear that the most likely candidate would be a protein.
Research begins
Now at McGill University, Dr. Bounous would meet Dr. Patricia Kongshavn, an up-and-coming PhD who was playing a critical pioneering role in the new field of clinical immunology. Together, the two published their first joint article in 1978 - The effect of dietary amino acids on immune reactivity, launching their quest to find an effective protein to enhance immune function.
A breakthrough
While none of their early trials provided groundbreaking results, a protein extract would miraculously be mailed to Dr. Bounous in the early 1980s to examine for its potential benefits. As it turns out, this protein extract demonstrated nothing short of spectacular effects when tested in animals, including lifespans that ranged from 30% to 50% longer.
Great Minds Think Alike
During the same period, Dr. Bounous was introduced to the exciting research being done by Dr. Wulf Droge, who was the first to describe the effect of glutathione on the immune response of a living organism. As a result, Dr. Bounous realized their protein may be affecting glutathione levels. Dr. Droge joined Immunotec as Senior VP of Research and Development in 2005.
New Beginnings
With a solid medical foundation and an emerging understanding of their protein's impact on glutathione & immune health, Dr. Bounous and Dr. Kongshavn officially launched Immunotec Research Corp with Dieter Beer in 1988 to push their research forward.
Science-Backed Growth
The Montreal General Hospital team, in collaboration with McGill researchers, looked at the effects of their protein on advanced HIV/AIDS patients, approved through rigorous board review. Dr. Bounous's team documented significant weight gain, as well as increased glutathione levels. While only a small trial, it helped secure funding for further research.
A Public Product
With this success, Immunotec was officially launched in 1996 in Canada and 1997 in the United States.
